Our new kitchen is completely installed and Taisir took us back for a look and introduced us to Hassan, his "assistant chef." You'll be hearing details of the new menu sometime around the end of May (How do you say "Yummy" in Arabic?).

Only one snafu so far. Apparently there was a mix-up at UPS and the Zone received the bizarre piece of medical equipment below.

UPDATE: Taisir now informs us this spit-like contraption is what makes the lamb Gyro sandwiches so tasty.

Busted!

Media_httpsmaystypepadcoma6a00d834515fc369e201116902c954970c800wi_qapaechclwhbekb

It was an awkward moment when our Coffee Zone Customer Loyalty Officer confronted this unnamed CZ regular sneaking a mid-afternoon dark roast at the Hy-Vee Starbucks. Asked for an explanation, the unsub stammered:

"I just hold it in my mouth. I don't swallow!"

Anyone with information leading to the identification of this tall white male should contact a CZCLO immediately.

Rocket Fuel on wheels?

"It takes imagination and dedication to transform a 1978 Toyota Chinook mini-motor home into a pirate-themed coffee house on wheels. But Sydney "Java Queen" Krieger, of Cambridge, has done it and has been navigating her business — the Coffee Pirate — through Dane County communities for about two weeks selling her brews to caffeine-deprived commuters. The 19-foot truck has about 8 square feet of space for the galley-style kitchen that comes equipped with a refrigerator, stove and espresso maker, all powered by either propane or an electric generator. "I can stand completely alone ... in the middle of nowhere and serve espresso," said Krieger, 50." -- WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL.

Clever bank heist foiled by nosy customer

Media_httpfarm4staticflickrcom3361334335571734873526ecjpg_feodhmadgdqolwj

Authorities were shocked to learn what appeared to be the painted entrance to a mural of the Ancient Ruins of Petra was, in fact, a doggie door leading to the vault of a local bank. Assistant Chief of Police Barnard Fyfe says the plot had little chance of success.

"The only way in was through the Coffee Zone and most of the regulars --we think this is a local job-- just wouldn't fit through the opening. We're investigating the possibility this was the work of bank employees who hoped to sneak into the Coffee Zone overnight for sticky buns."

As a reward, the unidentified customer who discovered the plot has been given permission to refill his coffee as often as he likes.

Taisir's tongue: Priceless

BBC News (VIDEO): "The tongue of the chief coffee taster for Costa Coffee --a worldwide chain of coffee shops-- has been insured for almost $14 million. Gennaro Pelliccia personally tastes a sample of each batch of raw coffee beans at its London plant before they are roasted and shipped to its stores.

"My 18 years of experience enable me to distinguish between thousands of flavours," he says.

Costa Coffee sells 108 million cups of coffee worldwide each year. The insurance policy was taken out with Lloyds of London.

Well, you know we're gonna have to sit T down in front of the camera and do our own version of this story.

Coffee Bean animation

Coffee bean Scan and animation from Panty Mython on Vimeo.

Local video artist Panty Mython created this video using coffee beans (and an almond) which was enough of a connection for us to include here.

"The object in the middle of the beans is an almond. That represents people who don't quite fit in, or just seem to be disliked for one reason or another. It represents people who just don't always conform to general thinking. Hug those people today. I'm one of them."

Muralist Jim Dyke had to work around those pesky customers as he works on the mural of Petra that will adorn the East wall of the Coffee Zone. Jim is just happy Pope Yanis didn't want this on the ceiling. Visitors to the Zone should see the completed mural on Monday.

Where'd the cream go?

Change is in the wind here at the Coffee Zone. We've moved the little shelf where the cream and lids and stir sticks where. The kitchen upgrade has begun with the addition of a big honking grill hood. And one wall (above) is being prepped for the mural of Petra, which should be completed this weekend.
