Rocket Fueled Yoga

While many yoga practitioners shun the bean, we know a few who get their Om on here at the Coffee Zone. We won't name names but you'll spot a few familiar faces (or whatever) in these photos (by Greg Perry) from Saturday's 108 Sun Salutations, a semi-annual event at the Show-Me Yoga Center, just up the street from the Zone. Cold wind blows through Starbucks

AP: "Starbucks Corp. plans to slash nearly 7,000 more jobs during a new round of store closures and other cuts, the company said as it reported Wednesday that its profit dropped by more than two-thirds in its fiscal first quarter.

The gourmet coffee chain plans to close 300 underperforming stores around the world _ including 200 in the U.S. _ by the end of the fiscal year in addition to the 600 U.S. stores it began closing this summer."

We're pleased to report no layoffs here at the Coffee Zone. In fact, Taisir Yanis has been named Full-time Employee of the Month for the 64th month in a row. Congratulations, Taisir!

The T-Shirt that never was

This sketch --unearthed in the Coffee Zone archives-- was commissioned for use on Coffee Zone T-shirts but abandoned when someone pointed out the similarity to a Crime Stoppers Neighborhood Watch poster.

Sharp as a tack, jittery as hell

Drinking coffee may be linked to lower risk of dementia, according to a new study, published this month in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. From NY Times:

"A team of Swedish and Danish researchers tracked coffee consumption in a group of 1,409 middle-age men and women for an average of 21 years. During that time, 61 participants developed dementia, 48 with Alzheimer’s disease.

After controlling for numerous socioeconomic and health factors, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure, the scientists found that the subjects who had reported drinking three to five cups of coffee daily were 65 percent less likely to have developed dementia, compared with those who drank two cups or less. People who drank more than five cups a day also were at reduced risk of dementia, the researchers said, but there were not enough people in this group to draw statistically significant conclusions." [Thanks, Kevin]

Editor's Note: The photo has nothing to do with this story but we've been dying to use it.

Zone Spotlight: Indiana Lynn

In 1974, Coffee Zone regular Lynn Morrow --a student at SW Missouri State at the time-- was on an archaeological and middle eastern studies tour that took him to Giza, Egypt where he climbed pyramids and rode camels (or was it climbed camels and rode pyramids? no matter).

In addition to this delightful photo, he has one of himself lying in a sarcophagus in Kefran's tomb, demonstrating the cultural sensitivity that has been his trademark at the Coffee Zone.

Look! Is that Beyonce?!

Not really. That's just one of the many ruses we used to distract Starbuckeroos long enough to slip a Coffee Zone cup holder on their venti.

We managed to distribute almost 10,000 during our three days in DC for the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

It was the kick-off to our twenty-oh-nine marketing campaign and a smashing success by any measure, hampered only by the fact there are no Coffee Zones in DC.

We were able to hack the Jumbotron video feed for a brief time Sunday afternoon but the NSA goons were swarming and we had to scrub the mission. But don't miss Super Bowl half-time. That's all I'm saying.

Drinking Seven Cups of Coffee a Day May Lead to Hallucinations

Researchers in the U.K. say people who drink at least 330 milligrams of the stimulant a day were three times as likely to have hallucinations as those who consumed less than 10 milligrams a day. That's about what you'd get in seven cups of instant coffee a day, but who the hell drinks that much instant coffee. Or ANY instant coffee. Ewww.

Nine of the 22 people in the highest-caffeine group reported hearing disembodied voices, compared with three of the 22 people in the lowest-caffeine group. Participants also reported seeing things that weren’t there and sensing the presence of dead people.

Inauguration Day

The Coffee Zone will be open regular hours on Monday and we're hoping for swarms of out-of-towners all dressed up for the inauguration of Jay Nixon, Missouri's new governor.

New topic: Yes, we know we've been neglecting our Twitter feed. I've spoken to our Director of Social Media and he's promised to work on the problem.
